Can someone please explain the point of Overwatch 2? It's just regular Overwatch with more maps, heroes and a slight visual upgrade, so why not just patch the OG game and have done with it? I'm completely fucking perplexed by its existence.

Releasing these changes periodically over a slow period of time would not bring any interest back. They did it for the hype.
Along with that, they likely thought they could not change the base game people paid for- to be free with a battlepass. Overwatch fans are too hardcore. Releasing a "new" game, making it free, then shutting down the old one to act as it's replacement is a mindgame to get people on board.
