He did a 360 on that and walked away

Carmack does not work on games anymore, he just wanks off into his vr headset.

That's wrong though, context and experience are a huge part of why people play games.

You think Doom would've been as successful if it was about playing Fifi from Fifi & Flowertots spraying flowers instead of about being a space marine shooting demons, even if the gameplay, code, level layouts etc were identical? Would Zelda games be as popular if instead of fulfilling the widespread dream of being an elf boy on a magical adventure to save the princess in a fantasy land, they were about a booger navigating plumbing pipes?

I look at a game like Last of Us which was praised for its story as revolutionary when all it was a series of the most basic paint by numbers story strung together.

Yet there were retards jumping up and down clapping. The stories in video games just aren't that good or compelling. So yes they are exactly like porn movies. They are see through with no depth.

And you base this on fucking TLOU?
I fucking love this aspect of nu-Any Forums. Plays exclusively shitty AAA games, but my god are you people convinced you totally understand the industry.

There is games that should have a good story imo, like RPGs or JRPGs.

I personally don't care if Peach gets kidnapped for the 39th time, thats okay with me, but if I spent 40h in a JRPG and spent a lot of time reading, I don't want to read boring shit.
I don't play JRPGs for the epic combat you know.

God I hate cheap JRPG stories.

When he said this he had no idea games like CoD 4, Dead Space 2, or Sekiro would exist eventually (all games with high ludonarrative synergy).

>play a game with a bad story
>naturally dislike it
>"this means stories in video games aren't good"

Yeah man and I saw Morbius the other day and the story was garbage, this clearly means movies simply aren't a storytelling medium and should focus exclusively on cinematography from now on. That's what would've fixed Morbius, better cinematography.

>>>THOUGH

The video game audience then was vastly different than the video game audience now.

It was one example user of which there was plenty of dick sucking of its story here on Any Forums at the time of its release.

It applies to basically every game. As OP says, modern developers are trying to make games more plot focused but they are still uninspired. I can't think of a game with a good plot which was actually genre defining which was up there will the greats of literature. They are so clichéd and I don't know why anyone would be jumping on to defend storytelling in video games.

That was just a phase, now he is into AI. I think he's till into rocketry just as a hobby.

That's not what I am saying user.

I'm saying that storytelling in games is mostly clichéd garbage.

Play better games

though

Okay, recommend me some games with amazing stories.

I've seen this thread hundreds of times, and every single time everyone who argues against Carmack somehow don't understand that the quote is not anti-story. It's not even really that dismissive of stories in video games. It's bizarre how storyfags of all people are so averse to reading two short sentences.

>It was one example user of which there was plenty of dick sucking of its story here on Any Forums at the time of its release
First of all, not really. People were pretty fucking critical of it on release here, especially fucking hated the ending.
Second of all, there is plenty of games that do have good stories. If TLOU is literally your only frame of reference, then you are a brain-dead casual that maybe should not actually make such grand sweeping claims because you know literally NOTHING about the reality of the industry.

>It applies to basically every game.
Again.
You LITERALLY don't know anything but AAA games at all. Have you played Pathologic? The Void? Cryostasis? Homeworld? Silent Hill 2? SotC? Penumbra?
Of course you did not. Those games are weird and old and don't have hundreds of millions of dollars to advertise, so how could you?

This and put better than my posts. I'm not anti story the stories are predominately just garbage filler.

Context doesn't equal story

Why are you mad about a post on Any Forums? You can disagree but it's not worth getting mad over. I have played some of those games you listed. I mean point taken but they are a small part of a sea of shit.

>Why are you mad about a post on Any Forums?
You said something really fucking stupid. People will call you out on that. Get used to it, because trust me, it's going to get worse in real world.

Carmack is a complete retard at game design so it matches

You're not wrong either but I think you're reading too much into what he actually said. He agrees it needs to be there and context is important. But at the end of the day story is the dressing not the draw. Having context and world building is important but making your game Oscar bait is defeating the purpose of games.

Context is still an aspect of story, when you ask "so what do you do in this game"
>you play as a space marine shooting demons on Mars
is the story answer whereas
>you move a character through 3D environments clicking on hostile characters before they "click" you
is the gameplay answer, try selling people on a game with the latter type of description

That's not what he said, and even his porn comparison is off since porn with a story is usually more popular than raw banging in a vacuum.

I live in the real world user. And in the real world interacting with real people you don't have a meltdown because someone disagrees with you. It's immature. At the end of the day you haven't really persuaded me of your position and just resorted to calling me names which is meaningless really. So as we always do I'm going to close Any Forums now and continue thinking what I was thinking. It's a waste of time all of this really. Have a great day user.

I think porn movies with a plot stopped being made decades ago

>even his porn comparison is off since porn with a story is usually more popular than raw banging in a vacuum.
that's why he says that the story is expected to be there, you brainless fucking moron. He doesn't even consider the possibility of there being porn with no plot, of video games with no plot, he accepts story's existence as a default and he doesn't argue for it to be removed. How is it hard for you to understand?

>I live in the real world user. And in the real world interacting with real people you don't have a meltdown because someone disagrees with you.
The fact that people calling you out on something dumb translates into "meltdown" makes very much doubt the veracity of the whole post. Also, welcome to Any Forums, this is apparently your first day here.

Pro-tip from a veteran: When you say something dumb and people call you out on it, just leave the thread and save yourself further humiliation like this.
I know this place is anonymous, but getting this butthurt over being called out is still incredibly pathetic. Have some actual dignity for a change. Again - once you do actually face reality outside, that skill will become actually useful.

>He did a 360 on that
You do realize if you do 360 you stay on the same place looking into the same direction?

Regardless, Carmack hasnt changed any of his view on bibeogames he just left them coz he got bored with the subject

Sounds to me like carmack should've stuck to talking about technical things, which he is good at, and not things like writing or storytelling, which he is not good at.

Your the mad one here user. Not me. I'm cool as a cucumber. See ya!
