I saw a promotion for Atelier Rorona on Amazon in 2010. I played it, it felt really low budget but the gameplay was really fun. I enjoyed Star Ocean’s item creation mechanics and in Atelier it was even more amazing. Nowadays it’s their one of a kind genre and the quality of life improvements are amazing.

I randomly decided to lurk an Ar Tonelico / Gust thread on /jp/, played through Ar Tonelico and wanted more. I had heard that Gust was making another game for PS3 called Atelier Rorona, but at that point knew nothing about the franchise. I bought a ps3 to play it then like within a 6 month span Neptunia and Ar Tonelico III came out then a few months later Atelier Totori. Good times.
