if you have to ask you're a retard

It's an innocuous question, why did it offend you?

Dungeon crawling in a 3d space with verticality for a price that the middle class could easily afford.

This is a stealth botw hate thread though, sneed goes in all fields nigger OP

It managed to do a lot of things really well during a time where devs could barely figure out how to even make 3D work in the first place. It had solid puzzle solving, a pretty big world to explore with tons of secrets, unique dungeons and boss fights, solid enough combat, great music, charming characters, and a simple, but interesting, story with the time travel aspect.

I wouldn't say it's anything special within today's context, but back then I remember most games being a nightmare to even control. So the idea of having a game that controlled well and offered a pretty solid adventure with tons of things to find and do was pretty crazy.

There were tons of games that did all that before this, what *exactly* was revolutionary? That basically every game after implemented?

Z targetting

Nudity

It transitioned to 3D without becoming shit. That can be said of very few franchises in that generation.

There really weren't, not to the same level of quality and certainly not in 3D on consoles. A lot of 3D games back then on console were super jank to control, with lots of graphical weirdness and shit. Then OoT came out, nailed the controls, then just provided a really solid gameplay experience on top of it all.

Maybe it's just an opinion thing, but I don't remember many games before OoT doing that well in a 3D space. At least not to that level of quality. You had plenty that came after it, but not much before.

"z targeting" which was new to games and still used in games like dark souls today. Also 3d adventure games were pretty rare. jumping from a snes to a 64 was a huge deal at the time most games were in 2d, even a lot of the best computer games were still 2d (there were a lot of 3d ones as well), jumping up to 3d as a baseline for an entire console was huge at the time.

this has nothing to do with the revolution I'm asking about. Revolutions are objective.

>Revolutions are objective.

They're explicitly not though? What one person thinks is revolutionary, another would say was just another game. People say that Undertale was revolutionary for the industry when it came out, and all it was was a pixelized indie RPG with a charming story/characters. People say The new God of War is revolutionary despite it just being another action adventure game with cutscenes filling the space.

I told you why I believe it was revolutionary for the industry. It nailed 3D controls and gameplay while also providing a unique adventure. All of this happening when most devs on consoles were struggling to even figure out movement, much less provide a solid gameplay experience. And thus it revolutionized the industry. Tons of devs started using Z-targeting, starting to pull from OoT's aesthetics/gameplay loop, and generally referred to it for what a game back then should look like.

If you disagree or don't like that answer, cool. Go fucking find another person to answer your question "objectively".

either a revolution happens or it doesn't, there's no inbetween. Anything else is just marketing.

>OP asks what was revolutionary about it
>Implies a revolution happened
>Answer with my best explanation as to why it was revolutionary
>"No! It was either revolutionary or it wasn't! You're not answering the question!"

Fucking christ user. Screw it, guess it's all just marketing then. There, that's your answer. You answered it yourself. Now fuck off.

If you have to ask...
