It was the last generation where consoles made sense as a cheap PC because PCs were still expense at the time (at least near the start and middle of gen6). Xbox was just a Pentium III computer for the most part.
Funny you should mention the Dreamcast, Xbox cut a deal with Sega as they left consoles and was secretly the Dreamcast 2 where Sega dumped a lot of their games. Sadly MS only really pushed Halo and the slight graphical upgrades to multiplats as its focus point instead of the unique things it had at the time.

There was early infighting with the Windows CE team that worked with Sega and the DirectX guys who saw it as their own thing (which they then secretly bypassed CE and stole Windows NT from the company servers to make their own OS). Perhaps the "brand" marketing and games pushed were part of his difference too.

Maybe. I didn't know about that part. I always just guessed they were using first party as a showcase of tech ability to try to sell on raw power in that sort of 'bit wars' sort of way. I didn't pay much attention though because all ever saw was Halo and I went PS2 because the PS1 was good to me. Sadly PS2 as much as I enjoyed it wasn't really a successor to the PS1, PSP was more that and it floundered since it was marketed as an mp3 player instead of a playstaion.
I could see the Xbox appeal though. It was a PC for non-PC people and in some ways was the first home theater PC. I don't get the point of the 360 though, a decent computer was cheap by then, and then the Xbone holy fuck it had nothing of its own. The current Xbox is the 'fuck I couldn't find a gpu machine'. But that first one was what I like to call the Dad console. Genesis was this as well, full of fighters, beatem ups, shumps, and sports games that a Dad may buy as they see interest in those. Xbox sort of seemed like that as well, a thing with expensive accessories like that mech controller, and stuff like that.

all of the dreamcasts best games got enhanced ports to, or sequels, on the xbox, though, where they became exlusive.
the xbox was pretty much the dreamcast 2 with backwards compatability. op is retarded and stupid.
