Mass Effect starts out good then gets progressively worse, ending on a note so sour it retroactively ruins the entire franchise.
Star Control II kind of drops you right in the middle of everything without a guide, and the more you learn the more sense everything makes and the better you're able to appreciate how tightly written the story is.
