I only played the first and the intro of the second, and it's obvious the game narrative was completely fucked by then. The bad ending was probably the result of not having a good outline for plot and themes.

I was already let down when they scrapped almost everything that made ME1 such a unique and comfy experience. ME2 is a good game, but I'd almost say it's the worst in the series, the combat sucks, the overall story makes no sense, and they removed the overheating mechanic and swapped it with ammo (they should've combined the two). the good parts about ME2 are the characters and their personal quests, that's it.
3 is actually really fun to play, and while the story falls short, it is the story that ME1 set up:
