They both go for different things. I prefer the first three Paper Mario games by a long shot but as a "series" it's technically worse due to identity issues with a staff change and direction whereas Mario & Luigi was consistent in gameplay and while it got dull for some I'd take that way over the treatment Paper Mario got though I do consider myself a Paper Mario fan way more. Either way, both have had great games, I wish most would just appreciate them both (alongisde SMRPG).

Overall Mario & Luigi but I think Paper Mario has better peaks (TTYD is one of my favorite games). As much as I disliked the combat in the newest Paper Mario it has really good writing and I had a ton of fun with it. Superstar saga is one of the better GBA games though and that's saying a lot

Paper Mario has been shit longer and has more shit entries than M&L.
Arguably the only really "bad" entry was Paper Jam, and that was Paper Mario's fault anyways.
One could argue that PM's peak in TTYD surpasses BIS' peak, but as a whole you're dealing with 4 decent games vs 2 great ones, which evens out.
Im glad M&L died because AlphaDream was losing sight of how to make a good game again with the remakes. Imagine a Sticker Star tier M&L.

Mario & Luigi at least kept its identity and turn-based roleplaying gameplay throughout the entire thing, and at least was able to have a last hurrah before Alpha Dream was doomed to bankruptcy, even if the games were losing their strength.
Paper Mario was and still is being twisted into something terrible that it never was, ever since Sticker Star. The highs of Paper Mario definitely exceed those of M&L in my opinion.

SMRPG is still king over all of them. Smithy consistently remains the coolest final boss, and his crew are the most fun to fight. Sure you fight some demons like the Shadow Queen, or insane people like Fawful and Dimentio, but Smithy is literally robot Santa Claus Satan, who smashes his own face in so he can turn it into a tank. Come on.
