That's because VIIR plays well. Hard Mode shows that the game becomes less of a button mashing action game amd rewards the player for playing it like an RPG. Optimizing materia set-ups for any given encounter, issuing commands, switching between party members for positioning, magic as the primary source of damage, etc. It's the antithesis of KH. Its combat system is less action and more RPG, and people love that shit more than "generic ARPG trying to be DMC #19473810."

7 was a complete story and episodic gaming has not worked out since dos. And it also apparently requires repeating, no one wanted this version of VII, we wanted VII with modern graphics.
