Pawns are NPC characters you can have travel with you, they are empty vessels, basically slaves to the arisen in order to help accomplish the arisens journey.
They come from the Rift, a dimensional space that is unknown to everyone.
You can create your own Pawn in the game and you'll see thousands of other pawns in the world, a lot created by other players. They can be hired to join you and help. They are probably the most useful party npc in any game I've ever seen.
You can hire pawns as you want and you can release them back to their arisen and give a thank you gift with them if they did well.

Able to send them on expeditions for materials (in case you want to play solo but don't want to brine them, while still getting a passive benefit).
More vocation options for them.
Better combat tactics options (think Dragon Age Origins)
Have different personalities that influence not only their actions, but also dialog (e.g. have a cheeky loli pawn constantly insult the player when they do a gaffe, while a motherly personality would make them worry for the arisen constantly, and regularly check on their wellbeing).
