The problem is, players who achieve very little in real life like to attach themselves to brands or sports teams. As such they can vicariously be a success through the brands they have aligned their existence with.
FF14 players, Wow players, Overwatch Players, Fortnite...list goes on. It's not a game they play to these people, it's their entire identify as a person and if the game fails they feel their lives are failures, and if it succeeds they have somehow also succeeded in life.
It's a sad and pathetic existence but one that is very profitable to the corporations they align with, because not only do they promote the game for free and attack the products rivals but they will overspend in the product too.
