On the one hand, they tried to use the characters and lore to tell a story and kept them all relatively in character through out. The character writing is actually, pretty good.
On the other hand, they have gone of the fucking deep end with OCs and faction politics and shit so power levels are stupid high now and and chance of telling a down to earth story about the tragedy of war (which despite the silliness seemed to be the theme the first few games wanted to leave you with) is completely gone.
