Final boss spams a move that wipes your entire party from full HP

5 felt about the same to me. It was always a game where the difficulty could creep up on you, but there are so many options to become so stupidly goddamn powerful that you didn't need to worry about it unless you tried to avoid them. 1,3, and 4 are easier, 4 absurdly so. 1 and 3 are mostly easier due to quality-of-life changes like being able to fucking heal yourself and save in the Crystal Tower. FFIV just straight up doubled the amount of XP you get for some goddamn reason. The only reason that FFIV was ever difficult in the first place was because they kept giving you absurdly unbalanced parties for big chunks of the game. If they wanted to make it easier, they could have given characters like Edward, Palom and Porom, and FuSoYa some more utility but fuck it, give the player an XP cheat. It's the worst of the bunch.

FFII and VI are way harder than the original games, but for weird reasons. FFII balances the stats a bit, but due to a programming oversight or something, any physical attack with a status ailment associated with it will be 100% successful. The late-game LOVES to throw enemies at you that petrify or instantly kill you with their regular attacks, and in the Pixel Remaster there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it. FFVI PR fixes a bug that had been left in all other versions, where the battle speed option only affected the enemies. So if you left the battle speed at its default setting or turned it all the way down, you would get turns way faster than the enemy. Since the PR fixed it, enemies feel fucking relentless. I'm in the middle of playing it now, and I got my ass kicked by fucking Ultros since he kept killing Banon faster than I could heal him.

Just another reason you should be playing the GBA version. On top of being more graphically cohesive and having extra content, you can manipulate your encounters to guarantee the mobs you want
