Pic related was the last arcade racing game that tried to be different. It got torn up by the critics for being too complicated and weird. Since then, racing games are split into exactly two camps - realistic carfag circlejerk, and Mario Kart clones.

The one modern arcade racer I could recommend is Cruis'n Blast on the Switch. It's a pretty low-budget game, but it captures the spirit of old arcade racers perfectly.

But sims are fun. Having more stuff to worry about in every turn is more fun. It's like complaining that games don't all have regenerating health and if you crash into a wall you don't just bounce off it like you're playing bumper cars.
Nothing wrong with arcade racers, but the arcades fucking died so obviously the games that were made for them would die too.
