And just pick up one of the Rebirth games on Steam or your console of choice, you'll know whether it's for you or not within the first 6 hours. The Senran crossover is good but it doesn't do a good job introducing any characters.

I've tried to play rebirth a couple of times but I don't get why there's a bunch of dungeons with randomly way stronger enemies that wreck your shit.
Am I meant to ignore all this shit and just follow the critical path or what?

And yeah, rebirth 1-3, then VII (note: pronounced "Victory Two", NOT "7").
Just definitely make sure to stick with it until VII, there's a massive jump in quality compared to the previous three, which can feel a bit same-y due to asset reuse.
And fair word of warning: a bit of grinding is required in Rebirth 1, especially before a couple specific bosses. Thankfully, this isn't nearly as much of an issue in later games.

pretty much, RB1 has a bunch of optional stronger dungeons, but you can just ignore them until you're strong enough for them. They can help a bit with the stricter level curve though.

Oh, I forgot to mention that VIIR is shit, don't bother with it, it just removes a bunch of stuff arbitrarily. The only thing it adds of worth is a VR gimmick you can just watch the scenes of on youtube anyways.

re:birth 1 is getting (or already is) remade for ps5.

This isn't something you should do. But I actually started with Re:birth 2. I remember wanting to buy something moe that day and steam recommended Rebirth 2 to me. Didn't even know it was technically a sequel until I had played it through.

Then the next game I got was the original PS3 game, which is completely different from the rest of the series.

Start at mk2 or Re;Birth2. Everyone else will tell you to start at Re;Birth1, but Felistella doesn't have a proper grasp on the characters. Mk2/RB2 will introduce you to the setting. V/RB3 will (re)introduce you to the main goddesses. If you have a really high tolerance for bad gameplay, it's safe to start at the original on PS3. But do not start at RB1, it changes too much.

I can also say that Re:birth 2 / MK2 is probably better start plot wise. I mean pretty much all of the plot from the sequels is taking place from that universes Neptune and cast and not from the original game / Re:birth 1's cast.

I didn’t like that after having the first game kind of make fun of horny scenes in anime the second game just leans completely in the opposite direction with tentacle stuff. It’s also been the better part of a decade since I played either so maybe I’m wrong
