This is probably the only major worry I have about Silksong. I'm hoping the quest system just formalises stuff like the flower quest and not going back to old areas to collect 12 bug asses.

My guess is that it will be a mix of both. There are lots of NPCs from what we've seen, some helping Hornet fight, some being escorted by her, some participating in new arena matches, etc. So I imagine they'll mix things up in that regard.
But I wouldn't be surprised if there were some optional tasks that just give you things to collect while exploring.
