The anime was based on the first Gungrave game. For what I know, it isn't canon to any of the games.

It's the other way around, they made an anime based on the game's story before it starts and it completely blows the game out of the water. If you haven't played the games then just skip the first episode when you watch it, you can always re-watch it later and see you didn't miss anything. Episode 1 is identical to Episode 17 and spoils a lot of stuff that's just there as fanservice for the OG fans.
