The one I played let you create a character just to rob you of any agency and turn into a Kirito self insert anytime anyhing plot or character related happened
Literally for the first four - six hours or so I was enjoying brief spurts of field combat with my OC and mock MMO mail with npcs just to dread showing my face in town, because most of the time it'd drag me into Kirito and his roastie harem VN game again
Can't say it gets better from there because I dropped it, then watched the anime, then regretted both ventures

A good SAO game would have to be
>Progressive's setting. Day 1 of Aincrad
>play as a different character from Kirito (Either a new guy or an avatar. Only one has writing)
>never interact with the main cast. Or better yet, have it be a timeline where the main cast or at least the main duo don't exist at all
>each game release is only a certain number of floors in Aincrad for sequels and DLC shenanigans
