like 50% of the work on Demon Souls before adding any extra objects was jamming the old code into a new engine, seeing what works, then polishing off the jagged edges

Also as much as I hate it, it's just kind of a fact that even with cutting physical production costs, ask from any industry person and they'll tell you that using the same justification for pricing old games at 60 (or less even earlier) back in the day, games should be priced at 70 these days. The price has just been kept artificially back because it has becomed a taboo and no platform is ready to be the first one to price their games at 70

Packaging and distribution is a tiny fraction of the cost of each copy sold; averaging around $3. Like, yeah, they could drop the price by $3 per copy, but part of marketing is pricing consistency. The product is $60 to the consumer, regardless of how the consumer decides to buy it.

As for the $70 price tag, I kind of get what you're saying, but it's also just a matter of market pressure. A lot of people consider $60 an extravagance in their everyday lives and so many would rather wait until the game costs what they expect than pick it up at full price if it's bumped up to $70. Publishers got away with artificially inflating game prices via various editions for awhile but people eventually caught on and got fed up with that practice too, but I honestly think it's one of the better ways to approach the $70 price tag. Excise some small part of the game (preferably cosmetics or whatever) and charge a premium to use it, and make it purchaseable down the line.
