Because we got an extra set of shoulder buttons in their place.

Why do OPs post then abandon?

Because SNES and Playstation and PS2 won during their respective generations so their button configuration became the norm, also you can't easily press A and Z at the same time so having the two extra shoulder buttons as said is better for most games.

because gamers are retarded and can't handle more than the 4

actually this

first post accurate post

It was dumb

Here's the reason. Person answering is a hardware designer at Sega.

Would you?

I don't care about 6 buttons but why have Xbox and playstation given up on having a start and back button? Now it's options and screenshot for playstation not to mention the useless light bar and touchpad. Then on Xbox you have "view" and I don't even remember what the other one is called now. Why don't they just call them start and back anymore

Can you swap out the dpad and stick? Odd design if not

Real answer is too many buttons at the front scare normie consumers.

Touchpad seems to function as start button now, since it's still a button itself.

xbox and n64 ones are very bad examples of six button pads as due to their lack of symmetry certain button combinations on them are impossible.

The touchpad has two physical buttons underneath it. Pressing it works like two additional physical; buttons.

What purpose did Select ever actually serve. One pause/menu button is all that is needed.

You don't need more

You're completely right

It was the back button.

To select things on the menu.

For what reason? Six buttons only makes sense for fighting games thus the d-pad should be symmetrical to them.

Mostly a menu button, they just changed the name or moved its functionality to the touchpad since it can give you more options from the get go.

4 buttons became standard because they are all accessible with a single finger, usually the thumb, while 6 buttons require more than one finger, which forces the person to hold the controller in an unconventional way that isn't comfortable for the vast majority of consumers.

In olden days you would press select to scroll options on a title screen.

Nah, it's nice to have a second menu button to open up a different type of menu. Select often opened you straight into the map for games that had it, while start took you to other menus.

>five fingers
>six buttons
what was the point?

So use A and B?

Then they make it contextual, like holidng Start for one second opens the map

To jump and shoot like the Lord intended.

When you're in a menu

Even as kid I was disgusted about having select

It's a controller made for fighting games, the design is based on what most players who use controllers instead of arcade sticks need. Hori is one of the few manufacturers that actually creates designs based on player experience and not just because they are copying other designs like the Chinese do.

>menu
What are you some commie? When you press start it's only action anything else is a disgrace.

I know, I was just asking if can be swapped because the raised elements remind me of controllers that let you swap thrm

That's fucking retarded.

who else had one of these

Snoy held the industry back by literally just adding grips to the SNES controller and calling it a day.
Be glad they realised they fucked up enough to add joysticks

That's how they've been doing it for years lol. Its not retarded it's a shortcut. Its not new at all

What

i also had the original boomerang controller

They did have four shoulder buttons atleast

It's not a bad controller but the stick is completely useless and it's kind of bothersome when you actually play, I get what they wanted to do but honestly it's not a good idea, nor a good placement for the stick, should have been lower.
I personally recommend the Power A fusion fighting controller, but you gotta like floating disc pads rather than standard d-pads

Sony tried this design with the PS3 and got roasted. They rushed and made the six-axis with no rumble.

>you will never ever play with the banana controller

feelsbadman

What got me is that the six button on the genesis only worked for 2 games street fighter and mortal Kombat. I don't think I even had a single game that used more then just a,b and some times c and never the shoulder buttons.
