Why is it so much more popular than DOTA?
LoL
It appeals to a wider audience.
It gets updates and content frequently.
Dota's last patch was one new hero and one hero rework with minor updates to other heroes, no map changes and not many new items added. And this was after a 9 month gap.
Its a Valve game lmao
has better colors
Huge clever marketing and "appealing" art style
No turnrate.
Seething dotards will rage at my post but it's the factual truth. You simply cannot try both games and end up linking dota more, because of turnrate. To a new player LoL will feel magnitudes more responsive, they'll think dota is always lagging despite having a good ping and they'll drop it like the turd it is.

Just like everyone else, which is why your game is dead. ;)
>came out before Dota 2 by 2 years, beta even earlier
>one of the, if not THE, first big F2P game of the pre-2010s
>at its peak could put out new heroes every 2 weeks, and is still on a 2 week update cycle to keep it "fresh"
>some of Dota's archaic but intentional designs like losing gold on deaths, denies, and undefined roles don't exist
That is all it takes.
It was the first free to play to not be pay to win, too. Introduced everyone to the concept of the cosmetics-only cash shop and literally everything else available in a timely manner through just playing the game normaly. Helped a lot in the age of thriving korean MMOs.
No it wasnt, HoN was first and better
>frequent new charcaters
>way better marketing
>skins that references pop culture
>smooth and clean art style
>diversified into other media outlets like merch, a card game, a series
>they seized their chance to consolidate during the E-sports boom and the early days of Twitch
you can hate them and their blatant zoomer pandering all you want, but it cannot be denied that back in the day they knew where the videogame culture was shifting and managed to evolve with it, meanwhile Dota is just another flavor of Valve's "3 is forbbiden" meme
Smoother learning curve.
DOTA had to wait on Blizzard and Valve for that marketing push.
Riot actively asking and accepting feedback.
Aesthetics and Lore not being bound by Warcraft's High Fantasy
This, best post
Yes that's why literally nobody played that game and it died, because it came out before LoL and was better on top of being free to play
Except literally all of that is wrong
You're so fucking retarded
>It was the first free to play
DOTA is free with all characters available to you lamo
>wonky controls are a feature
Dota 2 came out years after LoL, retard. LoL was first to be free with a cosmetics-only cash shop. My post is correct.
This is true and I actually like both games. Turnrate is simply gonna put new people off, but you can't just get rid of it because it'd destroy the way the game is built. It's fine for both games to coexist because they do different things and have different design philosophies.
>but you can't just get rid of it because it'd destroy the way the game is built
Actually you can. LoL is proof you can do away with turnrate. Just remove it and balance around it no longer existing. Better than letting the game die.
Of course that would require actually updating the game more than once every decade so they'll just let it die.
Sometimes, I sincerely don't get why something is popular. I played LoL with some friends and it was plagged with smurfs and toxic players (even my friends were yelling at me even though it was my 4th time playing and the first time with a character). I've played other competitive games but people weren't as aggresive as in this game.
when I type lol in dota 2 my hero laughs :D
OP said DOTA which came out in 2005-2006 , not specifically DOTA 2
Less raging, seething dotards. For many, that was the turnoff getting into dota, they rather played the game that was open, and accessible and people loved gushing and interacting about it, rather than the bitchy elitists who dragged down everything and everyone. Turns out, people don't like playing with sour assholes.
Everything else just grew out of this,
