Prerendered can look really nice when displayed properly. FF7 is certainly not the most impressive looking game, especially when Resident Evil 3 exists but the art direction and attention to detail is there, it's a very charming game. Some of the angles chosen are really bonkers too, game has great cinematography.

Sure bottom looks better but it's very boring and generic. If FFVII had released at the time looking like that no one would remember it as well. The top is more charming and "soulful", and also allows for greater input of imagination, hence why the game is so fondly remembered today.

Why didn't they just go with better 2D sprites instead of polygons if this was the best they could do at the time? No amount of nostalgia makes this look good or even servicable. This isn't a matter personal taste, I can't tell wtf I'm looking at. Its so bad that it looks like its an entire hardware gen behind FFIX. They should have kept their polygons in the lab a few more years.
