Can ANYONE save the MMO genre at this point ?
i can, give me 100 million dollars
something like EVE except more fun would do it, for me. and actually I don't think it would be that hard to make. there's just no will to make anything but chore sims
It doesn't need saving, you just don't enjoy the genre/it's a different time
MMO's need to evolve to action games similar to Monster Hunter and Dark Souls
NEXON.-
i enjoyed the combat on b&s, tera and black desert a lot
i wish some cool dev picked the action style of those into a better new mmo
New World was the biggest letdown. I know it had all the red flags but it could have been great.
Me
MMOs are one half linear RPG and other half endgame grind. The second half sucks and shouldn't exist. Elden RAng has a better PvP system than any MMO does. A single-player/cooperative game with invasions is better than an open world with ganks.
MMOs have to be grindy as fuck though to keep people subbed or buying micro transactions though. And it's not just about greed, you need a ton of a money to keep those servers up which need to be able load 10 to a 100 players for a given location plus the the 100s of npcs that can be onscreen for every player and it needs to seamless with minimal lag or it'll be unplayable. Players have high expectations of what should be possible so it's hard making stuff that actually works and gets people to play. I think OG wow just had a huge advantage of being one of the few mmos around in it's heyday so people flocked to it because it was really cool at the time. Plus the community was huge and people started to play WoW because their friends were doing it too, hell people used to use wow as place to hookup with an online romantic partner, but the community faded away over the years because people got bored of the grind. Its going to be a long time before people are interested in MMOs again and its going to be even longer before some dev actually makes something of that caliber. Kinda went all over with this sorry.
I don't get the current year interest at all. Everything is sanitized so the only drama you get is on discord... meh. Just sounds boring.
action games take significantly more bandwidth and performance than shitty tab targeting. So devs want to maximize the number of potential players, and it's easier to make too.
Just make the worlds RNG generated every time so people can't use guides.
I've never played an MMO past getting to the endgame. I don't know how anyone plays that shit. I don't think servers are nearly as expensive as people say. They end up being a big cost for a big game, but private servers run fine for cheap with hundreds of players, and server costs are mostly linear due to how much instancing there is everywhere. I'm just not gonna wade through the daily/weekly grind. Gacha games are the same shit where they're kinda fun and interesting and then you're gated and all the content is timed. It's terrible.
>but the community faded away over the years because people got bored of the grind.
Wrong, the community faded because each expansion made leveling solo easier and quests require less grouping to complete, not to mention raid find and shit.
Medieval eve would really toot my horn
I will do it if I ever get rich from crypto.
It couldn't. The devs behind New World had no experience with mmos or rpgs, and there was never any clear vision for the game. It was bound to fail from the start.
new world actually could have been a juggernaut if character creation wasn't pozzed you have to allow degenerate features into your game and let players make the character THEY want
it would be jam packed if you could make anything from BBW gigantic tiddy amazons to shota fuck boy healers it had the world and it had the perfect autistic loop systems on top of actually using the holy trinity which is rare atm in the genre for newer games but it just had to fuck up CC and that was their true downfall
Final Fantasy 14 cope thread
You clearly haven't played them all and only the selective few popular ones, the key to becoming the next big massive MMO is to literally make UO with nonshit combat and proper character creation and decent graphics not over the top but something like WoW mixed with age of conan.
Keep everything the same except combat and you're literally rich, multiple fun gameplay loops and none of them are the definitive end-game loop everyone picks what they like and they're happy, it still baffles me no one has attempted to properly recreate UO/SWG, maybe repopulation but those guys picked a shit engine to use.
