Are shmups a good genre?

Yes, but its been around so long its hard to innovate, leading to stagnation

Yes, it's extremely based except for the 2hu trannies

Shmups are absolute peak game design. Simply kill everything and don't die, all you have is 8 way movement and a few attack buttons. No autoaim, no combos, no context sensitive bullshit, just you versus the game.

>b-but touhou!
obsessed

Yeah, but you have to be really into them to play more than like a couple.

No wonder this thread is going to die then
Literally too videogamey for Any Forums

Yep. Any Forums can't into real video games, and there's no story or marketing or tertiary bullshit to piss and moan about with shmups so instead people just don't post

Hell yea.

Touhou (unarguably the new shit) is actively harming the shmup ecosystem by drawing in weeb/tranny secondaries which will inevitably subvert the genre should they decide to stick around. You cannot dispute this.

Shmups innovate all the time. The "problem" is that that innovation usually lies in the scoring systems, which most people nowadays are conditioned to just completely ignore.

Hi Mark

Opinion but I don't think the genre really needs to "innovate," it just needs to make good games. Having a unique feel to the bullet density, patterns, etc. helps though. Garegga feels entirely different from Dodonpachi even if you completely overlook scoring, it'd be nice if more games could come out that have that similar level of individuality. Nowadays we mostly just get CAVE and Touhou clones though

tranny genre
except touhou, that's the only good stuff

Yeah, it'd be nice if all the big shmup developers of old times weren't fucking dead and the genre wasn't being carried solely by indie devs. Indie games are cool and all, but the good ones are hard as fuck to find and many of them lack the level of polish that you'd see in old CAVE games n stuff, which sucks because presentation is an incredibly important part of arcade genres.

Raiden 2 is still the best looking shmup ever made

>will inevitably
Touhou and its fandom have been around longer than you've been alive.

I like em, but I'm more of a casual fan. I'm not really interested in scoring systems and stuff, usually I'm just happy with being able to beat the final boss.

touhuou suches

(You)
