This, and all you really needed was one game with the ability to get all the music you wanted through DLC.
it lives on thru clone hero
Getting 40 different record labels to give you the rights to their band's best hits is very hard to do. Even if they do, it costs a ridiculous amount of money to get those rights. Even more so, when everybody and their mother was making their own clones of Guitar Hero, those record labels would charge more to game publishers, "bidding" the rights to their songs.
By Guitar Hero 5, the cost of the rights to each song, along with the game's development, was not covered by profits. So, the genre died.
Guitar hero 3 needs a good PC port and custom songs with an easy to use editor. This would make all rhythm games obsolete henceforth.
>he doesn't know
I know about rocksmith and whatever the shitty other one people play is. They both pale in comparison to GH3.
This is why open source community driven rhythm games are the end state.
No licensing, no waiting years for 40 new songs. Just people creating charts for music they like for its own sake.
>oversaturation of the market
Activision was the one that oversaturated it, and Kotick outright stated that was the goal. A major competitor and a handful of low-budget copycats popped up, so he said "fuck it, milk it until it's dead, and take the full band thing to sell more plastic" and put out 20 games in under a decade.
It's a shame, because the post-Harmonix mainline Guitar Hero titles (World Tour, V, Warriors of Rock) get a bad rap for being part of that era despite being really good games with good soundtracks. Also DJ Hero 1&2 are both excellent and that series was buried alive with Guitar Hero's corpse.
>he doesn't know
That's what guitar hero became, no wonder it died.
