Have just finished the second island and got to the boat to visit said new island in the "Present"(?) time and i have to say, so far it has been a great adventure.

I am a massive DQ fan but I have never played VII until now because of the time investment to finish the game and just because I was playing other stuff, but now here I am.

The game starts quite slow paced and mundane in many ways, definitely a filter for many, but I enjoyed to take in the atmosphere of the world, barren, peaceful but boring and lonely in many ways.

That said, have you played DQVII before or any other game that starts quite slow and really grips you after a while? Or a game that people like to brush as just a "meh" game that is actually quite a hidden gem?

It then continues exactly like that for the next hundred hours. It's cool that you're still enjoying it, but it's very much an endurance run and you've just started, it's a bit too early to make big conclusions.
Good luck with the game, also Maribel is love.

I liked how slow it is.
If you're a big fan of the series then you're in for an incredibly immersive experience.

It feels kind of... Refreshing? Yeah i guess refreshing is a way to say it, that mundane and easy going adventure that this game has so far ofc.

I finished DQ I, II, III, IV, V and XI, got quite far on VI but Save file got corrupted and I lost a lot of my motivation back in the day, so VII it is, what I'm trying to say is that after playing and finishing all of these games, nothing has the same easy going and mundane feel that VII has and honestly it feels great!

It definitely helps that Maribel and Kiefer are great characters and I can't wait for the rest of the gang to join up, even if this is an endurance test i can do it no problem, I mainly play JRPG both new and old so I'm used to extreme grinds and very very slow pace but idk man, there's just something about VII that has been quite interesting.

Kinda wish I got the 3DS port of this. I have DQ4 (DS), DQ8 (3DS), DQ9, and DQ11. It probably goes for an absurd price now, ugh.

>Emulation

It may seems weird but I was captivated by DQVII and played it until the end without stopping.
But when I played DQXI I stopped at one of the filler story in the beginning. It feels too boring somehow. Maybe because I didn't play it on a handheld.

Awesome, I might just play on my retroid at 10x speed when I need to. I've only played 8 and 11 and enjoyed both

I find XI to be an absolute masterpiece, but yeah the little filler stories are hit and miss, the Mermaid story for example was absolutely fantastic but I do understand why some would stop for some time because XI has some crazy highs that seem to never stop going up, but when it drops low damn, it really drops.
Just palying the 3DS version at regular speed should be very enjoyable, that's the one I'm playing and the pace has been very nice so far.

The way it tests your endurance isn't through normal DQ gameplay unfortunately, it's through lengthy plot sections where you're just running from one NPC to the next to make the plot happen. Plot that almost never has anything to do with you or your party.
At some points I was groaning wishing to just go to a dungeon already and Quest some fucking Dragons instead of reading a visual novel about a love triangle drama in a southern village.
III is my favourite because you start a new game and two minutes later you've got a full party and you're out there murderhoboing the cute wildlife to your heart's content.

Beat it trice and all three times used fast forward to grind, no gonna lie, I had a blast with it but I am a huge DQ fag and I can see how people can get bored with it, specially when the game doesn't do anything special compared to previous DQ games, no monster recruitment, same class system as VI, only 6 charactets and of those only 5 are permanent, getting shards to advance the story is fun and addicting but having to revisit the same town twice and in some cases five times can get annoying to some people (I like it) specially when he game is like 100+ hours, lastly the emigrant town is a pain to set up due to the rng of it.
At least the game has Maribel and to be honest I like all characters, story wise is the best DQ in my opinion due to the episodic nature of the game, many moments will make you shear a year, content wise the game has two extra dungeons and like 5 different emigrant town results depending who you send there, there's also the monster zoo to complete (never did it nor I care), weapons are worthless if you know how to grind the proper classes and the fashion/int/strength contest is also fun as fuck and it gives you pretty good awards.
All in all the game does a ton but doesn't has anything unique about it, maybe the story and it's episodic nature? If so they succeeded.

Samefaging
>same class system as VI
This isn't bad I liked the class system and the game in general as many say the game doesn't rush the story or the player is just go explore islands wich like I say, I like it.

I really like how the engine 7 and the DS remakes use looks.

In a normal DQ game pic related would be self-sabotage, but with VI and VII's class system it's a reasonable decision that totally makes sense.
It's insane.

Nice blog retard

Honestly, I would have liked if the game had the same engine as VIII, but the 3DS engine is fine too, even. Though some monsters like Slimes look a bit strange, I thinks it's because they are too shiny.

But the PS1 version yeah, I love that engine, basically the same for the DS remakes of IV, V and VI, one things that I wish it was the same from the DS game has to be the animated sprites, not just during attacks but also idle animations, it really goes a long way in regards to looks.

Thanks!

It looked fine for 7 and 4 on PS1. It looks more jagged on DS and it completely ruined 6's aesthetics.

>it completely ruined 6's aesthetics.
Elaborate?

Soulless.

Ironic answer considering the game, but sure fair enough.

I remember buying dq7 from a second hand seller app. The girl who sold it to me was a younger nerd girl who asked me to go get a coffe with her after I payed for the game. i declined and told her that she was too ugly for me and she left crying. It was quite the fun experience.
I never got around finishing the game, I got bored after you reach a town in a canyon with a big bridge in the middle and where everyone has wings. However I gotta say I really enjoyed the whole section that starts when you enter the church where you can change jobs(I'm bad with names sorry). It was very memorable and it shook the gameplay formula in an unexpected way.
