why do antarctic game trailers rarely focus on gameplay?

I feel like you asked this question despite already knowing the answer OP

Because the devs don't either.

Games sell on pretty much hype alone.

Bingo. The companies don't care, all they care about is marketing and generating hype for a product that we know will be shit, but the crowds still eat it up regardless.

Because normies like pretty graphics?

Normalfags don't want gameplay, they want to feel like spiderman.

i want to have sex

>why isn't an announcement/reveal/cinematic trailer a gameplay trailer

To understand the design choices in games marketed to normies, you need to look to what other media normies consoom.
Pop music is basically a record label whoring out a prostitute and calling her an 'artist' to generate hype. The thing they're actually selling, that draws in the customers is the whoring-out part. They're selling sex and the music is just how they go about monetizing it.

In the same vein when games are designed to market them towards normalfags, they are essentially selling movies or 'cinematic experiences' and the games and gameplay are just how they go about monetizing it. It is not the focus for the developer, it isn't for the customer. So it falls by the wayside. Having actual mechanics that allow the player to fail or force them to use problem solving skills, takes away from focusing on the visuals and the sound design. So everything alternates between walking simulator and QTEs.

>BRUUH THAT'S SOOO SICK BRUUUUUUUH FR FR NO CAP
>Doesn't check gameplay, just pre-orders
that's your average consoomer

It's not just the trailers, it's the games themselves too
Because marketing fun gameplay is harder than marketing muh epic cinematic CGI cutscenes
A lot of mediocre AAA games are designed around the marketability of the game and that's why so many of them suck as games
Pic related is the most selling game of all time and it's pure gameplay

Because their gameplay isn't generally good, and when they make the trailers it might not even be finished to the point that they can show it yet.
Also, because they tend to sell off of visual spectacle and name moreso than off of gameplay.

tetris is also most sold game of all time. its all gameplay as well. just give people simple gameplay and it will sell. like candy crush is worth billions.

Zoomer

>implying the west even makes gameplay trailers

We used to have cinematic trailers combined with a playable demo to cover both grounds. Most of the drama in the past was when publishers would use full CGI trailers that wasn't representative of the actual game, to the point they start having to insert a little note at the bottom saying "Not actual gameplay footage".

They don't want to commit to anything they might cut from the final game.

The problem is that it's incredibly difficult to get people to play your game when it's all gameplay like that. Conveying fun gameplay in a trailer is basically impossible, just look at the minecraft trailer

because good gameplay has and will never be necessary for making a financially successful game
