Actually play it again. I used to think the same since I didn't touch it after release. I thought it was just analog vs d-pad, but the entire physics are fucked up. They baby-proofed tick tock clock. Graphics are much worse. Dividing power ups between characters sucks. Minigames and bonus stages are kinda cool but that's it.

Wario played like absolute dogshit and made the game worse when you were forced to play him to get certain stars. Same with Yoshi but not as bad. Luigi had the exact opposite problem of being utterly broken and made many stars a total joke.
Even if this game had true analog stick control it would still be worse version of the origonal.
