Not trying to shill, but it does genuinely have a lot going for it for pretty much every interest. If you want proper raiding and challenging content, you'll find plenty of stuff to work on. If you want an almost fully singleplayer story, it's there and pretty well written for the most part. If you want to hang out with friends or RP, you can find entire housing set ups with communities starting clubs, bars, and other forms of hangouts each week.
There's card games, mahjong, fashion options, decent camera features for people who want to obsessively take screenshots, music to collect, mounts to grind for, crafting, achievements for those crazies, a pseudo-roguelite dungeon (two of them), and almost all of this is accompanied by decent matchmaking options and QoL features.
I wouldn't say any part of it is the best out there. You'll find better raids in other MMOs, more fun combat in other games, and better written stories in plenty of media. But the fact that there's so much in just one game makes it easier to garner the attention of almost everyone.
Also, at least for now, people seem to think it's this perfect little "wholesome" community with zero toxicity. Which there's plenty, but better hidden than most MMOs out there.

I literally said you can find better elsewhere. My point is that the game has a little bit of everything which then attracts a lot of people to try what's there.
Regardless, that's a matter of personal taste. I enjoy triple triad. And I know some idiots out there who even enjoy mahjon in that game. But that's kinda the deal, isn't it? You may not like it, but instead like something else in the game. Whereas someone will like it, and that's what gets them to log in. Like I said, a little bit of everything.

You can't even fully enjoy PvP at the highest level because of 60% of players abusing the fucking plugin that is essentially cheating.
Every side content is completely contained outside of titles and glamour and mounts.
You spend all this time collecting all this useless shit and the game basically denies you any significant way at getting ahead of other players. Everyone is hard capped at a certain level in terms of stats and abilities.
XIV's only real MMO job is Blue Mage. Every other job is rigid as fuck with no flexibility. You can only play one job a single way. How the fuck is that giving players freedom of choice?
XIV is cookie cutter as fuck and takes no risk.

I find triple triad loads of fun and its definitely more creative than just shoving poker in there and calling it a day.
That said I wish there were more golden saucer games that got people involved with each other like blitzball
