Wildly depends on what you like, game has a ton of build verity but keep in mind, some builds are WAY more gear dependent then others so not everything is exactly viable starting off.
But, do you like to cast shit? Do you like sword and board melee? Do you like to summon?

It's ass.
Just torrent the old LoD version, there are even portable versions that you don't even have to install, slap on something like d2dx for high FPS support, as well as addons like Plugy and a few others for QoL features and you already have a far better game than D2:R.
And when you're bored you can always install various bigger mods, some of them even have their own seasons, ladders and active communities. D2:R is so shit they won't even let you install an item filter.

I'd argue that you need to be more active in your movement and positioning in D1 then in GD.
The irony is that yes, D1 is super slow in your movement speed but actually takes more inputs to play effectively.

You can't run in Diablo 1 but it isn't slow in any way, it's super action packed. Everywhere you go you'll be wading in a sea of enemies.

Diablo 1 isn't an ARPG, it's a pretty standard dungeon crawler. Diablo 2 is an ARPG.

Try plugging in a controller. I thought it was way better because of the UI alone. You can see a lot more abilities and items than you can with the default kb/m. I didn't think I would ever prefer the controller, but I do.

I just hate that you have to mod the game to play like it should just out of the box, but speeding it up and pumping the mobs does do wonders for GD. There is a decent game hidden in it.
