I thought Hexen 2 was better. Level design wise I guess. I beat it with the Assassin which had a completely useless passive skill but those grenades were sure fun.

Which class should I play as a beginner? I'm leaning towards the cleric because he seems like a good middle ground with good weapons and stats and apparently the best weapon in the game (wraithverge). The Doom engine is designed for shooting and not melee combat and the fighter seems melee focused so it seems like his experience might not be the best and the mage seems like the hardest and for more advanced players.

Fighter's the easiest to get your bearings. Cleric starts the weakest but becomes the strongest. Mage is really strong but only if you know how to properly use his weapons. Fighter and Cleric are both great to start with but Fighter is more exciting for a brand new player.
