Despite being called RPG you can't level up particular skills, your characters' damage depends primarily on their level, not their skills or equipment.
It's even worse in FFVI where half of party based on abilities which are not scaling from strength or magic at all. You don't have any journal or quest list but that's fine because these games are mostly linear and you travelling through "open" world is meaningless. Square made such an excellent game called Chrono Trigger where MOST of these flaws where fixed, why didn't they bring those gameplay elements to Final Fantasy and continue to make same games all over again?
