The animations are fucking terrible. For a game that looks like it's going to be nothing but Sonic running and jumping around it's pretty inexcusable for the running and jumping to look so stiff and lifeless.

The single upside to this game, is the potential mod support of swapping in different (and better) open worlds.

Sonic Utopia is what this game should be.
It's a large sandbox, not an open world, the aesthetics look like they belong in sonic, there are actual enemies.

So they took a Xenoblade Chronicles map, put Sonic in it, put rails, boost pads and springs everywhere and covered the world in insipid puzzles like "step on the lights" and "turn the statue."

The problem is that they don't stick with a formula, to keep refining it. The formula that started in Rush, was good to the point they kept doing it till Generations, then they threw it out the window for Lost World.

Aside from all of the obvious problems, this is the real killer right here. Sonic has always been about learning how to utilize the environment to your advantage. Figuring out how to interact with slopes and ramps in a way that allows you to achieve maximum speed, to avoid obstacles with confidence and grace. That's what set the series apart from other platformers at the time. It's what makes the Sonic games fun: learning how to go fast. This shit? This isn't fun. There's nothing to learn. You just hit the boost button and move in a straight line with your horrendous turn radius until you hit a spring or a boost pad that puts you on a pre-determined path and you solve a puzzle from a mobile game ad.

The game itself isn't the problem, it's how bad people fellated it. It was an "okay" game with plenty of flaws and a lot of room for improvement (hopefully improvements that they make in the sequel), game journalists and Nintendo brand mercenaries inflated its worth by touting it as the game of the decade.
