It's a bit more linear than some other games in the series, but that's only a negative if you weren't aware of that going in and were expecting it, which is fair I suppose. If you go in knowing that, it's a super fun and satisfying action game with a good story and boss fights (Nightmare is up there in terms of memorable bosses). Again: just because a series goes in a slightly different direction doesn't make a game bad. The same people complaining about its linearity would complain that it was too safe if it followed the formula. Give it a try if you haven't, Any Forums, it holds up
