System Shock 2 was always babies first retro game though? It's been like that for years. And since the Enhanced version of System Shock 1 came out with controls that aren't completely 1994, people can actually play the damn thing and it turns out that underneath the controls and interface issues there's a game there that was over a decade ahead of its time.
Still, barely any zoomer has tried to pick up Ultima Underworld and every single fucking youtube video that tries to go over the history of immersive sims only ever show you the first level of Underworld because no one can be bothered to do the research of sitting on their ass and playing a slightly clunky old game. Plus people just don't know what the fuck the actual definition is (pic related is the actual definition from Looking Glass's old website back in 1997) and get it confused with fps/rpg hybrids (like Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines) or tactical shooters for some fucking reason (Cruelty Squad). So basically even when they try to talk about immersive sims they manage to get the basics completely fucking wrong and expose that they don't know what they're fucking talking about.

Oh also one thing I forgot to mention: Dishonored, Prey 2017 and the Deus Ex prequels were all fairly successful. Maybe not so much Prey but it's built a decent cult following over the years. I mean, zoomers have their own immersive sims now. That might explain why they know what the fuck System Shock is.

I had the misfortune of playing through both of the Ultima Underworlds and I think these zoomers aren't missing that much. System Shocks are better games and cause less shock (lol) to the players unfamiliar with old controls.

It's the rather clunky name for the old Looking Glass Studios games from the 90s (Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Terra Nova and Thief) as well as a few games by ex-LGS devs from the early 2000s (System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis) after Looking Glass went bankrupt in 2000. Basically Looking Glass were making first person games at the same time as Id were making the very first first-person shooters (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake) and they actually beat Id to market since Ultima Underworld came out before Wolf 3D and it was in actual 3D unlike Wolf or even Doom. Their games were really fucking ahead of their time and super influential but then they stopped making them due to behind the scenes chaos.
Immersive sims have sorta come back now via things like Arkane's games (Dishonored, Prey 2017) and the Deus Ex prequels but now the term means 'games like the old immersive sims.' Which is inherently flawed since loads of games have taken influence from the old LGS games and they're trying to recapture the magic of something that was way ahead of its time 30 fucking years ago.
Main thing is unscripted, emergent gameplay though. That's the big breakthrough of the old Looking Glass games. However modern game engines can kinda do that shit by default. But Looking Glass were trying to do that at the dawn of 3D gaming and some of their later games still do shit that modern games don't really do.
