Doom II is a great casual filter, especially on UV and up, they didn’t enjoy the levels because every enemy dies in one hit on the lower difficulties and they don’t appreciate the craftsmanship

They have things called the Caco awards going back to the 90s which crown the best Doom WADs

Cacowards definitely aren't a comprehensive list, but there's a ton of really good stuff that'll keep you busy for a long time.

I have played Alien Vendetta, Valiant, and Ancient Aliens. All were great.

its bullshit and i hate how i'm forced to stop playing the game (killing demons) just to do a stupid keyhunting puzzle
the only puzzle i need to solve is how can i make the most out of my limited ammunition and if i can go through the level by meleeing the shit out of everything

it's not a good level but it's also short and simple
no really obscure hidden keys or doors you need to shoot or anything

Yeah the increased variety in enemies levels and the super shotgun more than makes up for a couple of dud maps

This is precisely what's wrong with nu Doom. It lost any level design and is now just arenas where you shoot monsters. It gets boring quickly.

My theory is that people go into Doom 2 unprepared for 30-32 consecutive maps and come away soured when they get fatigued at The Pit, where an episode of Doom 1 would've ended. If you take each map individually, most of them are fine, even good, with much better encounter design and verticality compared to Doom 1.

You can peek and kill most monsters in one shot and the ammo economy is very efficient.
Basically the same things that make the normal shotgun the workhorse of Doom 1, but even moreso. Killing pinkies in one shot is especially useful.
