In my opinion, the "mainline" switches from 2d to 3d with Mario 64. Not sure if mainline includes 3D World or even 3D Land.

This is the correct answer. The "New" games, the "Land" games the "3D" games are spin-offs. Mainline Mario games, since World, only release about once every 5 years or so.

SMM was made by the actual 2d Mario staff, so I don't see why they wouldn't be mainline, But Land was Gunpei Yokoi people and SMR also had most development done by another team with the 2d Mario folks only overseeing.

This, plus the current gen mario kart for the most recent system (or whatever you owned at the time) is included imo. For me mario kart wii was the goat but mk8 is up there with it in feel. 8 arguably has better gameplay

The TRUE name is Super Mario, Bros. They've just been running with is since then.
