it's one of the most rewarding and practical workouts you can do. most people don't do movements properly on any exercise, so yes they fuck up their back on deadlifts. you're fine if you do the workout properly

People will say do both because that is most "efficient" but either one is going to be hard on you and doing both is going to be harder. if you have the willpower then go for it, otherwise just eat less and when you eat make it healthy. dont drink anything except for water. weight will come off and you can just play videogames all day.
Lifting weights is going to help you lose weight though, it doesn't just build muscle only
