Based on the description they seem to work almost exactly like they did in Torna though.
The big advantage it had over 2 was that you didn't need to menu to switch around party members or rely on the gacha to even get the correct characters, both improvements that 3 is carrying over.

they literally only exist as a nuisance, and are purely detrimental to exploration. why are they so damn eager to make areas superficially closed off for no good reason? just put an overleveled monster that targets you at the entrance if they want to save an area for later

Because they've always done so.
Even in XC1 there were areas that were locked behind quests. The differences is that completing the quest unlocked the area, while now completing the quest increases some random stat that allows you to reach the area.

the quests in 1 vs the literally everything in 2 is still an argument against field skills lol, if you can keep people out of areas for a good plot-related reason, then what the hell are field skills for other than wasting peoples time?

Literally nothing.

Gating areas, or providing more to do when returning to an area at higher levels.

The party could be exploring an area early in the game at low level, not be able to open a prominent chest, get attacked by a high level monster, have to flee, and then trigger a mechanism that prevents the monster from following, but that could be re-opened later.

Field skills present a way to enable all of that.

I agree with you man. field skills just seem to be a lazy copypaste of HM skills from Pokemon. nobody even liked HM skills in Pokemon, you know what we did? we captured pokemon and called them HM slaves.
