He was branded by The Rokakku with a K because its the most prevalent letter in their name and he was once a legendary rudie. After the brand he couldnt go out and skate anymore without being instantly recognized even under disguise. So instead he supplies rudies and whatnot with tech and intel about the Rokakkus moves. Instead of letting the K rule him he adopted the K and made it part of himself.

This was explained in the japanese manual.
