Can't answer regarding Mario movie, but for Sonic movie's success, the director was a person who worked on CG movie production for Shadow's game, and given how much he austically cares little details that references the game and other media, the director is a massive Sonic fan and understands what do Sonic fans wants, unlike other movie game and TV show directors.
And also because Sonic design was made by another massive Sonic fan
