Doom 2's base maplist is pretty shit yes. That's why you load up Scythe or Ancient Aliens or Plutonia or something with more meat and less Sandy Peterson on its bones.

I think it's an alright mapset among the commercial releases, maps like The Twilight can fuck right off though

He did actually make a couple of cool maps, but they're mostly only cool in that 90s experimental way
his maps are aesthetically awful but they have fun gimmicks
Some of his maps are genuinely good, without needing an asterisk. The problem is that he had to churn out a bunch of them in a very short amount of time because Romero was a lazy fuck. They couldn't all be winners.
Just complete it once for historical reasons and play wads like normal people do.
Something I had against most of his maps even without that rushed aspect was he was trying to play around with something just because he kinda could. I like the guy and he made some of my favorite maps
But he also made Slough of Despair though and 7 year old me had a LOT of very mean words to share with Sandy Peterson if they ever met
Why don't people like that map? It's windy and claustrophobic, but also feels like a perfect "Hell" map. You're not in a techbase anymore.
Body part maps are great.
For me it was because of how much of a dick in the eye it felt like immediately after e3m1, a much more inoffensive map
