Why don't more games have actual writers doing the actual writing?

Wtf are you talking about, the writing in DE is fucking awful.

Name a 1 (one) single game with better writing than Disco Elysium.

Open steam, click on the first game you see.
Bingo, you've found it.

I wonder this myself but if I had to guess I would assume it's a combination of most studios not thinking great writing is worth the cost investment of hiring one, most good writers not being very interesting in video games or in working with developers, and the video game industry as a whole being disgustingly nepotistic meaning dogshit writers can just float from studio to studio.

Pathologic 1/2.

Lack of standards. I remember playing 1 hour of horizon zero dawn and immediately dropped it because of how awful the writing was. Barely any journo talked about this. Standards for writing in vidya are abhorrent.

Injustice 2

The writing of pathologic, at least the english translation, is kinda awful.
Maybe the original is a masterpiece but I have a feeling you never played that.

Can't stand DE's writing. It's barely a step above some smug redditor who got an A- in 10th grade English and now think they're the next Douglas Adams or something.

Who's your favorite author?

Yeah, it was complete trash, but I can see how ethno-masochistic communist discord groups would like it since it appeals to their lack of self-worth

because the majority of the market plays video games for gameplay and escapism. not to experience a psued visual novel.

Killer7

I can understand someone feeling that way about Classic HD, that games writing is quite unusual and strange. Characters speak more like poetry and philosophy dispensers than actual people. I can understand that not being appealing, though I love the writing style.
Pathologic 2's writing is undeniably great imo. A quite drastic change in the writing style but it nails what it's going for imo.

>J-JUST GOOGLE IT...I-IT'S ALL OVER TWITTER

>your brain on fighting games

Debatable but they both have different types of writing. DE is written in prose and feels like a Steinbeck novel while Pathologic is more poetic. Pathologic 2 is also unfinished.

Fun but no

>Fun but no
elaborate.

>brain on fighting games
How does that detract from the story?

he's downplaying for the sake of it.

>Pathologic 2 is also unfinished.
That's true, but Pathologic is also three full games stuffed into one.
Also, there is this website for Pathologic 1 full of stories and lore concerning the Town. Many of these were written by the games writers. The English translation may not be the best, but it may give us a feel for how these writers can handle prose, or at least how they handled it over 15 years ago.

Play Japanese games or mystery focused titles

Planescape

meant for

Because then they turn into pretentious dialogue dumps like the one in the image you posted

I honestly can't think of a game that has worse writing than DE.

Have you played any video game ever?

Because games are not for smart people

probably the closest out of everything mentioned here. Even still I'd give it to DE for being more polished, snappier and better paced.

Some of this stuff is pretty good imo, if a little rocky in a couple spots, probably due to translation issues.

Okay, real talk. No political bullshit, no "is this a VN" or anything else. Just real talk. Answer me this one question.
Was The Man From Hjelmdall a real person?
