Just a reminder before any retarded censorshipfags pop up: the Japanese version has an English text option and it's completely uncensored, and you can easily import or digitally buy the Japanese version with a Japanese Eshop account.

3 hours of story mode play. Then replay story mode again for 3 hours. Or you can challenge yourself on hard and make it take longer.

It's made by Tengo Project, which is a small team from Natsume made of the original devs who are working and expanding their old games. It's why these re-releases have a lot of love and care.
Also keep in mind that the new game is more akin to Sonic Mania in that it is a mixture of old and new content, with remixes. It's a new game, not a re-release.

It gets a lot more palatable once they teach you the "advanced" techniques (hold melee, mash shoot). Popping a few of Pocky's turrets out and overlapping a barrier shield to trigger them can trivialize some tough encounters.
I wish there was a direction lock button, but at least Rocky gets it as his special
