Just finished emulating and by extension playing Pikmin 1 for the first time since the 'New Play Control!' re-release. I prefer that re-release, but it was easier to emulate the GC original, so that's what I did. Fantastic game much like its sequels, but oh my God the Pikmin are infuriatingly stupid in this game.
1. They are tweekers for nectar and will constantly, CONSTANTLY leave your party if they so much as smell grass or rocks within a 15 mile radius of themselves. I feel like this behaviour is a particularly egregious example of their dumb AI in this first game, a tendency to act almost child-like with their curiosity towards things which, at the wrong time, can put the rest of your current party in danger. 2. They are unresponsive at the worst of times to the whistle unless the cursor origin of the whistle's area of effect is practically right on top of them, those times especially noticable in tricky battles 3. They don't seem to understand that I'd rather them pick up items that have less than the required Pikmin currently carrying them than ones already on the move 4. The C-Stick Godsend that is the marching line technique isn't as good as it is in Pikmin 2 or 3 as in this first game, the Pikmin remain sort of in a vague cluster no matter the direction you push them in, makes getting across even marginally narrow walkways a fucking nightmare 5. HOLY SHIT. STOP TRIPPING. WE'RE JUST WALKING FROM POINT A TO B. YOU ALL HAVE FLOWERS ON YOUR HEADS AND YOU STILL CAN'T WALK IN A STRAIGHT FUCKING LINE.
Despite this like I said, fantastic game, just wanted to hear perhaps some stories from you guys as to how the Pikmin AI in this game has screwed you over in the past. I cannot begin to count how many Pikmin I lost just because one or two of them got curious about something stupid and put all my other Pikmin in danger as a direct consequence.
Thankfully I find that saving them from downing isn't too hard if you're not preoccupied with something, but yeah it got to a point for me when they were practically begging to drown so I just let the odd one or two go fuck themselves.
Funny, this guy did his 'poison' attack on me and like all of my Pikmin turned purple for a second or two, but then he died as they turned purple and they all went back to normal, so I guess they all would've died if I didn't get so lucky.
Less of luck and more of an oddity, I also had a moment in this playthrough where for some reason I had one more Pikmin in my party than I had out on the field, it was something like 59 out of 58. I looked it up and its apparently a common bug if Pikmin die in a way that is interrupted but not interrupted enough to save them or something, but I hadn't recalled ever seeing it before now.

Should've waited for Pikmin^2 so you can replay the first game within the engine of the second one

>abuse game glitches to make it more fun/remove bad thing So Pikmin 1 AI really is that bad.

Not heard of this mod and googling the phrase 'Pikmin^2' just brings up results for Pikmin 2. Got a link where I can learn more?
