this was genuinely the moment where I became a fan of his, not because of some edgy retardation about 'haha he said the nigger word hahha based based based', but because making such a criticism shows that he is more principled and socially conscious than only other critics, but the game devs themselves who set out to make a 'socially conscious' game about racism in the first place.
for a game that throws juvenile imagery in your face about fighting the evil bad racist people, they are too pussy to show what racism and slavery were actually like. I would even say that whitewashing history in such a way ought to be considered fucking insulting. it wasn't just forced labor with some mild rudeness and apartheid like you see in the game. it was fucking ugly, people got lynched, beaten, raped. bioshock infinite is the most neoliberal videogame imaginable to water down REAL history in such a way. matt was the only one to really shine a spotlight on that and not shy away from it, and he didn't give a shit whether pointing this out was politically correct or not

the unanimous and uproarious acclaim that bioshit: finite received, despite how shallow it was on every level, was more or less the moment I realized mainstream appraisal isn't trustworthy and I stopped giving a fuck about new / popular releases.
