Why are the sprites so terrible in this game considering everything else was top notch. Literally every other ps1 game has better sprites than this.

Play the FF7 Remake instead OP. It solves the problem you highlight.

I'm just more curious as why they made that design decision in the first place

a very early attempt at chibi style in 3d

didn't it start development as a n64 game?

>Why are the sprites so terrible in this game considering everything else was top notch.
They are designed to have expressive body language and be easy to differentiate a bunch of them on the screen at once, to have a very large cast of different characters (not just the main party members but all the various side characters like Shinra execs and Turks and Bugenhagen not to mention all the generic NPCs which look very different in Costa Del Sol than Midgar Slums.)

Cloud scratching his head, shrugging, shaking his head in pain, Barrett's fists quivering in rage, Tifa twisting uncomfortably. Cloud holding Aeris in his hands, Sephiroth-- his arms wide, Hell look at all the different run animations, Aeris looks dainty and girlish, Tifa does also but more athletic, Cid has this jank-ass lean that's hilarious, Cait Sith hops around, etc.

>Literally every other ps1 game has better sprites than this.
From what year?
How many sprites on screen at once?
How expressive are they?

A lot of games from that time period don't even have 3D sprites. Wild Arms (pic-related) was released around the same time as FF7 for PS1.

Not to any relevant degree I don't think.

Shit game

FF7 was notoriously unoptimized with its spaghetti code, its actually pretty incredible how much better technologically FF8 is.

not saying 8 aged well but it's miles above the overworld in 7 with both using the same amount of resources. The devs just weren't that great with 3d shit it seems.

AFAIK the only thing on N64 was a tech demo that featured FF6 characters

sorry, I didn't get a computer science degree and don't know the proper terminology

I would argue those look better than ff7

>unironically called 3d models sprites
So you're functionally retarded then?

If you don’t have some sort of relevant education, then you have no business questioning the fidelity of graphics from 1997.

Autism

>I would argue those look better than ff7
They look terrible you don't have much taste.
Regardless, they are far more static and infinitely less functional. That scene is a bunch of heads that mostly don't move at all. A sprite moves and looks at the camera to indicate the speaker and the dog's tail is wagging, that's literally it.

If you look at the history of Final Fantasy especially from IV-VII you will see the gradually increasing emphasis on story, they invested a lot in tools and graphics for visual storytelling, not merely """looking good""". In FFIV they did a lot with characters bouncing and spinning and trying to get the most out of simple head nods and waves. It was clearly constraining and for V and VI they greatly increased the range of expression on the sprites with surprise, laughter, and so on. There's that scene in FFVI where Kefka has soldiers clean sand from his boots.

sprites?

that was on an SGI workstation, at the time it was presumed to be development for N64 but I don't think it ever actually ran on that platform.

It didn't. People just assumed it was a N64 proof of concept since Square leaving Nintendo for Sony was unthinkable at the time.

>since Square leaving Nintendo for Sony was unthinkable at the time.
And then Nintendo launched a console with a game storage limit of 16MB

I see people use the term '3d sprites' all the time.

I guess that makes sense. I see games like ff8 and they look way nicer than 7, but that could be just getting to know how to make 3d games since it was new at the time.

>game released 2 years after FF7 is better technologically
Let me guess, you weren't alive during the 90s...
To put things in perspective, Final Fantasy XIII was released 13 years ago. 13 years before Final Fantasy VII is 1984. Final Fantasy I was released in Japan in 1987.

Assuming this isn't some weirdass bait thread purposely misunderstanding sprites, WA did have 3D models in combat. They were much pudgier and more SD than FF7's though.

yeah, that pretty much sealed the deal for a bunch of JP devs as Enix jumped ship as well. Square and Nintendo already had a history of butting heads as Nintendo canceling the SNES CD Drive really pissed Square off as they were already designing games to take advantage of the extra space (Secret of Mana being the most well known example).

>that could be just getting to know how to make 3d games since it was new at the time
That's exactly what it was. Super Mario 64 came out the same summer as the Final Fantasy VII Demo.

>WA did have 3D models in combat.
Yes, it did, but I always assume whenever someone starts bitching about the character models in FF7 that they are talking about the field map, not combat.

I'm curious how remake Cid is going to look like if they ever get that far, he looked way older than 32 in FF7's official art and in-game. Then again being over 25 is considered elderly in JP media.

why not just make them the same?
