Why would it have to be a perfect circle?

because the point of constricting map area is to corral the final players into closer and closer contact.

what would squishing players into a thin strip at the end of the map accomplish, other than knocking them both out at the same time if they fail to win sniper footsies?

have it be an eclipse of some kind and whatever object blocking the sun grows more distant over time, you'd end up with the same 'perfect closing circle' effect to corral players into the center

the circle constricts onto a point that is actually on the map.
also the constricted circles are free to hop around on the map, providing variety of location. a progressive wall of sunlight going the same direction every time will provide the same battles at the same locations every time.

Simply design the maps in a way that as you have to move further away form the sun it funnels you together, its not that complicated

they could even call it THE UMBRA or some other grimdark moniker

Going in a single direction like this is still terrible design because people will just camp.
The reason the circle design works is you dont know where the final area is which forces you to be dynamic with positioning. You cant just risk camping some building because the circle may not end up there.

You could randomize certain elements of the map (like they already do the loot) that appear in the funneled area and then it would be functionally exactly the same as a circle appearing but logically consistent with a sunrise
For this problem maybe you could have a ton of extremely hard npc's or something else to make it more dangerous than it would be worth to just camp there, this is definitely the biggest problem though.
