Perhaps they remind us of a time when we were attracted to these younger characters and it wasn't weird because we were in the same age group. The fantasying nature of our kid selves "getting with" said characters creates a more intimate connection that has persisted throughout the years, whereas older characters, often few and far between and with less-than-mature hair/styles of clothing that make the younger characters seem more grounded by comparison, are easily overshadowed by what is arguably the main cast of the franchise, which even if you didn't have that decade-old relation with, you'd still find attractive comparatively simply due to how us guys are, to be blunt. Also, the pretense that they are "kid characters" and labeling others as pedophiliacs for being attracted to them yet again falls to the wayside when we remember that these are not real characters, and as such you can find their size, mannerisms, etcetera sexually appealing without reprimand, *and* especially since these "10 year olds" often behave/dress absolutely nothing like such, further alluding to characterization that leans more towards fictional rather than real.
