Melee was a hit but Smash did not become an "event" with huge fanfare until Brawl. Wii was a very insular system and the only attempt at a Smash ripoff, the TMNT game, failed. PSABR also failed because it ripped off the crossover but not the gameplay when that's actually a pretty important aspect. Wii U was a failure so people still weren't seeing the dollar signs. Finally the Switch is a big deal with a huge software attachment rate compared to the Wii and way more overlap in its userbase with other systems, with Ult being the most popular Smash ever. It took awhile for people to realize it's okay to ripoff the general gameplay more, the same way it was fine for Doom to have ripoffs. I guess we can thank the more blatant indie takes on Smash for that evolution in thought for larger entities.
